Applications
Agricultural Drainage Trenching NZ
Agricultural drainage is about land performance over the long term — moving water off wet paddocks efficiently so pasture, cropping or stock performance improves, without over-capitalising in a dedicated self-propelled machine that sits idle most of the year.
The Job
What This Involves
Farm drainage work is typically run across open paddocks with a tractor already on the farm, cutting trenches for drainage coil or pipe at a depth and spacing set by the drainage plan for that block. Runs can be long, ground conditions vary paddock to paddock, and the practical constraint is usually tractor horsepower and PTO capability rather than site access.
Machine Selection
Why the Right Machine Matters
Because the tractor is already on the farm, an attachment trencher avoids the capital cost of a dedicated drainage machine — the deciding factor becomes matching the trencher's power requirement to the tractor's horsepower and PTO, and its depth range to the drainage plan for that paddock. A two-tier conveyor system also matters on farm ground, since it places spoil cleanly to one side rather than leaving it scattered across the paddock.
Things Worth Considering
- Tractor horsepower and PTO configuration available on farm
- Depth required by the farm drainage plan for each paddock or block
- Trench width needed for the drainage coil or pipe being installed
- Soil type — heavier clay soils behave differently under the chain than lighter, sandier ground
- Spoil placement across open paddock ground

Common Questions
Frequently Asked
Can I use my existing farm tractor with a drainage trencher?
In most cases, yes — AFT tractor-mounted trenchers are built to run off the tractor's own PTO and hydraulics, matched to a horsepower range rather than requiring a dedicated carrier.
How is agricultural trenching different from general drainage trenching?
The engineering principle is the same, but agricultural work is typically run at scale across open paddocks with a farm tractor, following a whole-farm or whole-block drainage plan, rather than the shorter, tighter-tolerance runs typical of civil or residential drainage.
