Carrier Type
Excavator Trenchers NZ
Hydraulic trencher attachments that mount in place of the bucket, giving excavators already on site the reach and control to trench close to boundaries, slopes and existing services — from TrenchWorks, New Zealand's trenching equipment specialist.
When to Choose One
What Is an Excavator-Mounted Trencher?
An excavator-mounted trencher replaces the digging bucket, driven by the excavator's own hydraulics rather than a separate power source. Because the excavator is often already on a civil site for other earthworks, this is usually the most practical choice where a dedicated trenching machine would mean bringing in extra plant. A 360° turntable on larger units — the MH100 in the AFT range, for example — allows angled trenching close to boundaries, retaining walls and slopes that a fixed-direction machine can't reach.
Machine selection comes down to excavator tonnage, which sets the hydraulic supply available, and ground hardness — some units are built specifically to crush or pull stones from the trench on rockier ground.

Applications & Guides
Excavator-mounted trenchers are the most common carrier choice for civil trenching, utility trenching and water pipeline trenching. Common Questions
Excavator Trenchers: FAQ
What size excavator do I need for a trencher attachment?
It depends on the machine — AFT excavator-mounted trenchers in the TrenchWorks range are built for different tonnage classes, from 8+ tonnes up to 20+ tonnes, matched to hydraulic flow and pressure. We can confirm the right pairing for your excavator.
Is an excavator trencher better than digging with the bucket?
For narrow, consistent trenching, yes — an excavator trencher attachment cuts a straight, uniform trench several times faster than bucket work, with less spoil to handle and a cleaner trench wall. See our Trencher vs. Excavator guide for the full comparison.
Can an excavator trencher handle rocky or stony ground?
Some AFT excavator-mounted units are specifically built to crush, grind or pull stones out of the trench rather than stall on them — a genuine advantage on rockier New Zealand civil sites.
