Tractor Trenchers NZ

PTO-driven trenchers mounted on the 3-point linkage of a tractor you already own — turning it into a dedicated trenching machine for farm drainage, irrigation, rural fibre and civil work, from TrenchWorks, New Zealand's trenching equipment specialist.

When to Choose One

What Is a Tractor-Mounted Trencher?

A tractor-mounted trencher fits onto a tractor's 3-point linkage and runs off its PTO, so instead of buying and storing a dedicated self-propelled trenching machine, the tractor you already own becomes the carrier. This makes it the natural choice on farms and rural properties, and on any site where a tractor is already on hand — open ground and longer runs suit this carrier type especially well, whether that's a farm drainage plan, an irrigation main, or a rural fibre rollout.

Power requirement scales with the depth, width and ground conditions the machine is built to handle — smaller units suit 30+ hp compact tractors for turf and light drainage work, while heavier-duty machines are built for 80–140+ hp tractors on demanding civil and agricultural ground.

Common Questions

Tractor Trenchers: FAQ

What horsepower tractor do I need for a trencher?

It depends on the machine and the ground — AFT tractor-mounted trenchers in the TrenchWorks range are built for tractors from 30+ hp up to 130+ hp, matched to the depth, width and ground conditions the unit is designed for.

Do I need a creeper gearbox or vario transmission?

Not for every machine, but some tractor-mounted trenchers are compatible with or benefit from a creeper gearbox or vario transmission for maintaining consistent slow forward speed. TrenchWorks can confirm what your tractor needs for a specific unit.

Can a tractor trencher handle rocky ground?

Some tractor-mounted wheel trenchers in the AFT range are rock-wheel capable, cutting through basalt-hard ground where a standard chain would slow down. The right choice depends on your ground conditions and the depth/width you need.
